Christopher Mitchell’s “Les Sirènes” brings an enchanting portrayal of Haitian mythology to the MOCA plaza, transforming the space into a mythological realm. This captivating installation explores the diverse mermaids of Haitian folklore, each embodying a distinct tale and moral from the rich tapestry of Haitian culture.
About the Installation:
- Exhibition Overview: “Les Sirènes” features seven unique mermaids, each representing a different aspect of Haitian folklore. These mermaids are depicted in various forms, from the beguiling golden mermaid who lures the greedy to the conch-carrying siren who guides sailors. The series also includes the environmental mermaid, who charms those who litter, the transformative mermaid who connects individuals to the spiritual realm, the menacing mermaid with sharp teeth and nails, and the divine protector of nature who rewards those who respect the environment.
- Artistic Vision: Growing up in Haiti and now calling North Miami his second home, Christopher Mitchell brings a personal connection to his work, aiming to bridge his community with the rich stories of Haitian folklore. The installation allows visitors to immerse themselves in these mythical tales through life-sized mermaid figures, each floating gracefully in and around the plaza’s fountain.
- Interactive Experience: As visitors explore the plaza, they will encounter these mythical beings both above and below the water, offering a dynamic and immersive experience. The transformation of the MOCA plaza into this enchanted space invites viewers to engage deeply with the stories and symbolism of Haitian folklore.
- Engagement: “Les Sirènes” serves as a cultural dialogue, encouraging a deeper connection with Haitian heritage through a visually stunning and thought-provoking presentation. Mitchell’s installation promises to captivate and inspire, turning the plaza into a living tableau of myth and magic.
